German women’s handball team plays for World Championship gold
After beating defending champions France, the German team already has World Championship silver in the bag. It could even win its first World Championship title in 32 years.

Rotterdam (dpa) – At the Women’s Handball World Championship, which is being staged jointly with the Netherlands, the team of host nation Germany has reached the final – for the first time since winning the title in 1993. The team put together by national coach Markus Gaugisch beat defending champions France 29:23 (15:12) in a sensational semi-final victory in Rotterdam.
In Sunday’s final, which will likewise take place in the Dutch port city, the DHB team will face Olympic champions Norway. Captain Antje Döll was the best German player in the semi-final, scoring nine goals in front of a crowd of around 5,000 spectators.
